I AM FEDERATION

WE ARE dedicated to perpetuating Jewish values by taking care of others, educating people and involving them in Jewish life. Why? Because if we don’t, who will? We identify the issues facing our community and address them with our partners. For us, it’s what being Jewish feels like.Together, we will do that because we are FEDERATION.

We all have a story about the role Federation plays in our lives. Though each of us arrives at this story differently, there is a common thread in our community that connects us all. Whether we are: providing a warm meal or building a playground in Israel or offering a shoulder to cry on or assisting with a job search or rescuing vulnerable Jews in Ethiopia or sending a child to summer camp or school or exercising at the JCC or praying at shul, each of us has been touched by Memphis Jewish Federation.

  • Alla Olswanger Lubin

I AM from Kiev, Ukraine. As a child I was not able to admit that I was Jewish. All that has changed. Coming to Memphis 34 years ago changed everything for me. I have been able to live a full Jewish life in a wonderful community. I want to be able to help others in my community, just like I was helped when I first came here. I am proud of my religion and who I am today because of FEDERATION.

  • Aviva and Yoni Freiden

WE ARE a young Jewish family who feels very strongly about growing Jewish Memphis. When we moved to Memphis we decided that being involved in the Jewish community was a priority in our lives. Between the two of us, we serve on the boards of 7 Jewish organizations. Being connected to all members of the Jewish community is important to us. We know how necessary it is to sustain Jewish continuity in Memphis and we are all in thanks to FEDERATION.

  • Jill Steinberg

I AM a long-time supporter of MJF. Learning from the example my parents set for me, I am proud to support the Jewish community which means so much to me. Through just one gift, MJF has allowed me to support numerous agencies with a single donation. Through their dedicated volunteers and allocations process, MJF identifies the greatest needs on a community-wide basis and distributes those funds accordingly. I will continue to be a cheerleader for FEDERATION.

  • Jonah Roberts

I AM a Memphis Jewish teenager who is passionate about my community’s traditions and religion. I had the privilege of going on an NCSY trip to Israel last summer. Imagine the excitement when you are linking arms with your closest friends walking directly to the Western Wall? Or when you enter Jerusalem after having a seven day countdown? The anticipation was incredible. I hope that everyone will have the opportunity to visit Israel. The trip of my lifetime was made possible through FEDERAT...

  • Paul Harmel

I AM not alone. I enjoy delicious well-balanced kosher meals every week. I can’t prepare these meals for myself so I come to the MJCC early each week so that I can help set up the tables and serve the food to my friends. I like to help. I especially enjoy the companionship and the opportunity to talk and visit with friends. I look forward to going every week. It is a great way to spend the day. Each day is a gift because of FEDERATION.

  • Billie and Joe Pierce with Isaak and Frankie

WE ARE supporters of MJF. We have learned about many situations and needs that affect our community and are happy to fund projects that inspire us and make a difference such as PJ Library. All families raising Jewish children from 6 months of age through 8 years old who register for the program receive a Jewish-themed book in the mail each month. We want to help our fellow Jews in Memphis however we can. We are glad that we can make a difference in our community by supporting FEDERATION.

  • Jill Shanker

I AM a retired attorney, stay at home mom, volunteer, leader, donor and active participant in the Jewish community. I am an advocate for communal giving and recognize that we are all a part of the success of our community. Learning how to be a more effective leader from my mentors in our community who take care of others is important to me. I can help to instill this responsibility to my children as my parents and grandparents did for me. This happens because of FEDERATION.

  • Brad Somer

I AM a caring father and husband in a devoted Jewish home. I am an oncologist who does everything that I can for my patients. I am an active board member at Federation, MJCC, Baron Hirsch and past president of Margolin Hebrew Academy. I am co-chair of a Mission Trip to Israel. I wear many hats in my community and am grateful for all that it provides. A strong Jewish community is the result of a strong FEDERATION.

  • Riley Kaminsky

I AM four years old. I get very excited when I get books in the mail. I love to read with Mommy, Daddy and my little brother at bedtime. It makes me happy. After we read we always say the shema. Sammy Spider books are my favorite. They teach me about being Jewish and the holidays. I am learning to read the books on my own, the pretty pictures help me. Thank you and toda to PJ Library and FEDERATION.

  • Jonathan Frisch

I AM passionate about the Memphis Jewish community and strive to ensure its viability and sustainability. I believe in Federation’s mission to support Jews at home and around the world. I am able to interact with all streams of the community and form relationships with community members I might not have a chance to meet otherwise because of FEDERATION.

  • Kallie Brown

I AM a college student, religious school teacher, USY volunteer and active participant at Hillel of Memphis. I want to be there for my community and be a part of something bigger than myself. I have experienced what it means to be a Jewish young adult and I’ve seen how Hillel is able to help every college student in Memphis because of the support from FEDERATION
